It’s human relations thing

16m17s, 2009

Basically, this video consists of the signs in the female toilets of a girl’s student hostel at a university campus that I was a resident of in Delhi. I became interested in the different ways people communicate, through written language and visual form, over the issue of cleanliness in a shared communal space. Although quirky, funny and at times repulsive, It’s a human relations thing is also keenly serious—as everyday exertions about class, caste and (apparently) civilised ways clash in the toilet.

It's a human relations thing has been shown at:

  • Mori Gallery, Sydney along with new works by Susan Norrie and Abel TM (2009)

  • OK.Comedy: 4th Jakarta International Video Festival at the National Gallery of Indonesia (2009)

  • Sarai: Typos in the Writing on the Wall in New Delhi (2009)

  • Emerging Economies/ refreshing the art scene? curated by Ima Pico at the S.LOW cross disciplinary project in Berlin (2010).
